NBRU PRESS RELEASE
NBRU ACCUSE MINISTER ROSS OF FORCING RAIL WORKERS ONTO PICKET LINES UNNECESSARILY

General Secretary Dermot O’Leary said:

“The NTA (National Transport Authority) are on record as stating that Irish Rail has been underfunded by successive Governments stretching back over a long number of years; it is our understanding that the recent Rail Review (jointly undertaken by Irish Rail and the NTA) which is now before the Minister for his consideration, includes a proposal that Irish Rail should be reimbursed circa €125 million to compensate for the funding shortfall from 2010 to 2016. Such an injection would assist towards alleviating the so-called ‘legacy debt’ issue being used as cover by the Company to resist the claim for a well-deserved and long overdue pay rise for staff.”

Mr O’Leary went on to say:

“The Minister has a responsibility towards taxpayers, commuters and staff alike to ensure that the Company is appropriately funded to meet its public service remit, inclusive of maintaing existing rail lines and paying those that work in Irish Rail a long overdue pay rise, similar to those awarded to others in the public transport space. Failure to do so will result in train services grinding to a halt, which in turn will have a major impact on the economy. The Minister cannot be allowed to use the hoary old chesnut of using the taxpayers’ chequebook, given that the agency under his direct control has already recommended that it be opened to plug underfunding gap.”
